In 2009, he starred in the comedy-drama film Big Fan, and for his performance, he earned Gotham Awards and St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association nomination for Best Actor.

In 2011, he made another breakthrough after appearing in the comedy-drama film young Adult as Matt Freehauf. Patton Oswalt is a married man. He tied his knot with Michelle McNamara, an author, and journalist, on 24th September of 2005. She gave birth to their first child in April of 2009 named Alice Oswalt. Unfortunately, his wife died on 21st April 2016 due to a heart condition. Oswalt finished the book called I’ll Be Gone in the Dark that his wife left incomplete, and later, he also dedicated The Goldbergs final series to his late wife.

A year after her wife’s death, Oswalt started dating American actress Meredith Salenger, and they got engaged and married the same year in late 2017. They don’t have their children yet.
