A woman has died and a man has been nabbed by police hiding in a drain following a horror crash on a major arterial road north of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Anzac Ave and Oleander St in Kippa Ring – in Queensland’s Moreton Bay region – after reports two cars had collided.

A Holden Commodore collided with a Suzuki Swift carrying two women at around about 6.53am on Friday.

Inspector Craig White said investigations suggested the Suzuki was turning left out of Oleander St when it was struck by the Commodore, travelling eastbound on Anzac Ave.

He said a 72-year-old woman and her adult daughter were seriously injured as a result.

The mother later died at the scene despite efforts to treat her and provide CPR.

“It’s a terrible scene for emergency personnel, a terrible tragedy for anyone involved,” Inspector White, from Moreton Police, said.

The male driver of the Commodore – which was allegedly stolen from a Stafford address between September 18-19 – allegedly fled the scene on foot.

Police later located the man, 27, in a drain 4km from the scene.

“Our units did an exceptional job in finding him, he was tracked 4km from the scene by police dogs and was taken into custody without further injury,” Inspector White said.

He confirmed the man was assisting police with their inquiries.

Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit and detectives from Redcliffe are investigating the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam of the incident is urged to contact police.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Queensland Police advised motorists to avoid the intersection of Anzac Ave around Oleander St.

“Diversions are in place and drivers are asked to use alternative routes to avoid delays,” a spokesman said.
